George Massey Tunnel

Location: Vancouver, BC Contract Value:

Located under the south arm of the Fraser River, the George Massey Tunnel is 1,150 feet long. Built in 1959, seismic retrofitting has been recently required for this tunnel. KWH performed the installation of 350 Tons of steel plates to strengthen the six tunnel sections and their joints. Part of the retrofit consisted of continuous steel plates which are visible to drivers at the upper corners along the tunnel. Other plates are embedded in the tunnel soffit and roadway, strengthening the joints. These plates required grouting and drilling/setting of 42,000 anchors.
