Eastside Rail Corridor – NE 8th Street Crossing

Location: Bellevue, WA Contract Value: $443.9K

This pedestrian bridge crosses over one of the busiest streets in the area. The bridge consisted of five approach spans and one main span. The approach spans ranged from 60 feet to 70 feet long and the main span reached over 160 feet long. The approach spans were fabricated in two long halves and required bolted connections on each of the floor connections. On the south side of NE 8th Street, the new light rail structure caused limited mobility making it extremely difficult to use a crane to erect the spans. KWH opted to use two large 15k forklifts to erect each half and then assemble the span in place. North of NE 8th Street, there was enough room to use a crane allowing KWH to assemble the approach spans on the ground then lift into place. The main span was comprised of six pieces and was assembled during the day on shoring towers to allow a truck and jeep to roll underneath and jack it up. The truck and jeep transported the entire span to the road where two cranes were set up in the street. The erection occurred on a single complete nighttime closure of NE 8th Street. KWH also installed the architectural steel and stairs.
